The Gambling & Recovery Podcast Science Accelerator Course consists of 6, 1-hour continuing education (CE) modules designed to provide evidence-based and lived-experience insight into the experience of gambling-related problems. In each module, learners will listen to a recent After Gambling Podcast episode hosted by Jamie Salsburg, with special guest Mark Checkwicz, followed by a discussion of related research. Learners can earn 1.0 hour of CE credit per module.
Learning Objectives (Module 1):
As a result of completing this course, you will be better prepared to:
- Delineate reasons for gambling initiation.
- Describe the relationship between gambling availability and gambling involvement.
- Explain how financial circumstances can contribute to gambling behaviors.
- Identify emotion-based motives for gambling.
- Identify cognitive distortions related to gambling.

- Describe how the gambling landscape has changed over the past decade.
- Identify barriers to seeking treatment for problem gambling.
- Identify formal and informal treatment options for problem gambling.
- Explain different models of recovery.

- Describe how problem gambling relates to other experiences and conditions.
- Explain the effect of gambling problems on loved ones.
- Identify ways to provide support to affected others.
- Identify ways to support gamblers in their recovery journey.
Learning Objectives (Module 4):
As a result of completing this course, you will be better prepared to:
- Describe the effectiveness of self-exclusion programs for alleviating gambling-related problems and mental health conditions.
- Describe the role of psychotherapy and other clinical and social supports in self-exclusion-guided recovery.
- Explain the current barriers to self-exclusion, as evidenced by gamblers who have engaged in self-exclusion and the actors closely involved with the program.
Learning Objectives (Module 5):
As a result of completing this course, you will be better prepared to:
- Describe research findings regarding the tendency to delay treatment for gambling disorder.
- Describe the cognitive-experiential and behavioral processes that facilitate change in gambling behavior.
- Explain common harm reduction strategies that gamblers can complete on their own or that can be integrated into psychotherapy for gambling disorder.
Learning Objectives (Modules 6):
As a result of completing this course, you will be better prepared to:
- Describe the relationship between gambling identity and gambling behavior as revealed by scientific work.
- Explain the role of personal identity in recovery from problem gambling, with a focus on how personal relationships and obligations shape identity.
- Describe how social support and identifying as a member of a mutual support group relate to problem gambling outcomes.
Continuing Education (CE) Credits:
- American Psychological Association (APA) – The Division on Addiction, Cambridge Health Alliance is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Division on Addiction, Cambridge Health Alliance maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
- National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) – The Division on Addiction has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6121. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. The Division on Addiction is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs. This program offers 6.0 clock hours.
